Wayne Rooney and Nani ended lengthy scoring droughts with two goals each as Manchester United finished a bad week on an upbeat note with a 4-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers Saturday that took them to within two points of Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Having gone out of the Champions League following a meek defeat at Basel Wednesday, United used Nani's first club goals in 14 games and Rooney's first in nine league games to restore some pride.

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson marked his 70th birthday on Saturday by saying he hoped to stay at Old Trafford for another three years.

The Scot, who has guided the club to 12 English league titles, two European Cups and five FA Cups, celebrated 25 years in the United hot seat last month.

"I think I've got three years at the club," he told Manchester United television. "As long as my health stays up, and as long as I'm still enjoying it and still getting the satisfaction of the team doing its best."

Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez was Tuesday named as the best playmaker in the world by the International Federation for Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).

It is the fourth time that the Spanish international has been given the award, which is chosen by experts and journalists from 81 different countries and regions.

Xavi beat competition from his team-mates Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta and also from Real Madrid's German midfielder, Mesut Ozil to win the award, Xinhua reported.

Barcelona exploits earn Messi another award

Lionel Messi's exploits with Barcelona won him the World Player of the Year award for an unprecedented third year in a row on Monday at the age of 24.

The Argentine swept home with 47.88 percent of the votes in the survey among national team coaches, captains and selected media, receiving the trophy from former Brazil striker Ronaldo, himself a three-times winner of the award though not successively.

Although FIFA listed only the players' nationality when they published the full results, it was clearly Messi's stunning performances for Barcelona which earned him the plaudits.
Messi, followed by Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona team mate Xavi in the poll, was last season's top scorer in the Champions League with 12 goals in Barca's triumphant campaign and netted 31 times as they won La Liga.

Lampard still has a future at Chelsea, says manager

Midfielder Frank Lampard still has a major role to play at Chelsea despite being left out of the team that beat Valencia 3-0 on Tuesday to reach the last 16 of the Champions League, manager Andre Villas-Boas said.

Lampard, 33, who has played in over 500 matches for Chelsea since joining from West Ham United 10 years ago, was an unused substitute as Villas-Boas opted for a midfield three of Oriol Romeu, Raul Meireles and Ramires against the Spanish team at Stamford Bridge.

However, Villas-Boas, who also took Lampard off during Saturday's 3-0 Premier League win at Newcastle United, said he was in contention to face Premier League leaders Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Monday.

Gerrard earns Liverpool semi-final win at City

Manchester City suffered a third loss in four matches as Steven Gerrard earned Liverpool a 1-0 victory in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final at the Etihad Stadium Wednesday.

Captain Gerrard, who has just returned from a long layoff with a groin injury, clinically converted a 13th minute penalty to put seven-times winners Liverpool in the driving seat for the second leg at Anfield in a fortnight.

City, who were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United Sunday, improved after the break following a woeful first half but were still well short of the form that has propelled them to the top of the Premier League.
